Truly a great challenge that measures endurance, determination and patience of the contestants, that’s the karang relay, and because the people of Dipolog still posses the native traits, the Pagsalabuk Festival Committee held a Karang Relay Competition last May 24, 2005 at the Dipolog City Boulevard.

Karang relay contestants prepare to stretch their legs.

People from different barangays of Dipolog City joined this tough-kind of competition. They were able to show their skills on how to walk for approximately 300 meters using the karang.

And it’s off! Each contestant hustle to get on board their karang, an elevated walking stick made of bamboo.

Robin Gobillo a representative from Barangay Sangkol got the 1st prize worth P1, 000 in cash. Second prize was given to a representative from Barangay Estaka, Omar Balanay who received P850 in cash and Raul Pinollera of Brgy. Sinaman got the 3rd prize worth P650 in cash, while Jimmy Dimasuhid from Brgy. Sicayab, Apolonio Bagalso of Brgy. Sta. Filomena, Raymund Mentolarok of Barangay Gulayon and Rey Bodiongan of Barangay Olingan received Pagsalabuk souvenir tee shirts as their consolation prizes.

Mr. Feliciano “Boy” Jaojao, the chairman of the said event and an officer at the City Agriculturist Office express his heartfelt thanks to the participants from the different barangays of Dipolog, to the visitors, to the facilitators from the City Information Office and City Tourism Office of Dipolog and most especially to Dipolog City Mayor Roberto Y. Uy for his support to the different programs of the 7th Pagsalabuk Festival sa Dipolog 2005.

If you think you have what it takes to hastily walk fast on the karang to a distance of 300 meters then you might as well join next year’s Karang Relay Competition.

After an exhilarating race, arriving first at the finish line is Robin Gobillo from Barangay Sangkol.
